Ruth Sorrells Stamps passed away peacefully on July 9, 2012, in Castro Valley, California after a long life of loving and caring for others. She was born Ruth Louise Sorrells, in Augusta, Georgia, on August 3, 1925, and spent most of her childhood moving around the south with her dad's job as a civil service engineer. She met the love of her life, Edward B. Stamps, in Hendersonville, Tennessee, and they were married on May 25, 1945. They moved to Birmingham, Michigan, in 1967, and made many friends there before moving to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma in 1973. After Eddie's death in 1987, Ruth moved to California. Ruth is survived by her loving family: two daughters, Janis S. Hamel and husband, Gerard, Sr., of Chocorua, New Hampshire, and Susan S. Ruma, of Oakland, California; one granddaughter, Melissa M. Glasscock, and her husband, David; six grandsons, Gerard E. Hamel, Jr., and his wife, Kerin, Edward B. Hamel, Nathaniel E. Hamel, Dominic F. Ruma and his wife, Constanza, Matthew R. Hamel, and Kevin B. Ruma; one great-grandson, Giovanni A. Ruma; her brother, Curtis C. Sorrells and his wife, Helen; a brother-in-law, Thomas E. Stamps, a sister-in-law, Frances S. Oliver, many nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by two sisters, Marylene S. Williams, and Eleanor Sorrells; and a brother, Walter I. Sorrells. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for research in dementia to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday at 1p.m. in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
