With great sadness the Slaughter family announces the passing of Robert “Bob” Slaughter. Bob was born on March 2, 1940, in Rensselaer, Indiana and departed this world at the age of 85, in the comfort of his home with his loving and devoted wife by his side. Bob married the former Valerie Fillmore almost 54 years ago on April 24, 1971.
As a young man Bob answered the Nation’s call and served four-years in the United States Air Force (USAF). Bob’s USAF experience served as a catalyst for his passion of aviation. Bob aspired to be a pilot, completing training requirements to solo pilot single engine Cessnas. Following his military service, Bob joined the airline industry where he spent more than 40 years working as an avionics mechanic. In his retirement, Bob and his son Brian founded The Smokey Cigar where Bob became a local legend among cigar aficionados. He enjoyed watching his beloved Chicago Cubs and spent the better part of three decades cheering for the Miami Dolphins. Bob was a devout Roman Catholic, attending Catholic school his entire life, and was a member of Our Lady Of The Lake Catholic Church. Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He made a special effort to ensure his family, especially his grandchildren, knew how precious and important they were to him. Our memories of Bob will be treasured and his grumpy, but sweet demeanor will be missed.
Robert “Bob” Slaughter is survived by his wife of 54 years, Valerie (Fillmore) Slaughter; son, Brian Slaughter (wife Shelly); daughter, Cheryl Carlamere (husband Steven); grandchildren, Brady Slaughter, Kameron Slaughter, Emily Slaughter, Hunter Westbrook, Faith Sarah Westbrook, Jordyn Westbrook; and his sister, Joyce Para (husband Richard). He was preceded in death by his father, Otto Paul Slaughter; mother, Loretta Charlotte Lockard; brother, Paul Slaughter; sister, Patricia Mitchell.
Visitation with the Slaughter family will be held at Crestview Funeral Home on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. and will continue on Monday, April 14, from 11:00 A.M. until time of the funeral at 1:00 P.M. Immediately following services, Mr. Bob Slaughter will be laid to rest in Crestview Memory Gardens. The Slaughter family would like to recognize Alive Hospice for the compassionate care they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Alive Hospice, the United Service Organization (USO), or Our Lady Of The Lake Catholic Church.
