Age 63 of Portland, TN went to be with the Lord on October 9, 2015.
Grover was a simple man who enjoyed gardening, boating, fishing, and music. Especially in recent years, he spent most mornings gardening, and he would even offer up his prayers during this time of solitude. Despite being a man of simple tastes, he was multi-talented and could play several instruments including the fiddle, piano, guitar, drums, and the banjo. Interestingly, he was self-taught on all the instruments he learned to play. This fact is illustrative of his nature as a very determined individual.
He leaves behind a tremendous legacy as an honest man, hard-worker, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a caring and giving soul. He instilled his love of hard-work in each of his children. His family recalls his uncanny abilities as "a man always poised with an answer," regardless of whether or not his answers were actually correct. Though Grover could be serious at times, he enjoyed cutting up and making people smile. Above all, he was a man who put his trust in the Lord. Though he was not a member, he had many friends at the LaGuardo Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In practicing his faith, he gave generously to the Nashville Rescue Mission and to Feed the Children. He was certainly a man whose heart ached for those in need.
He is preceded in death by his great-great-aunt, Etta Slicer and son, Phillip Groves, Jr. Grover is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Mary Groves; daughter, Katrina Michelle Groves; sons, Marty (Jennifer) Brown, Tim (Misty) Brown; grandchildren, Katie, Bradley, and Hannah Groves, Micah, Malachi, Eli, Emily, and Evan Brown; aunt, Polly Haynes; the members of the Cherokee Yacht Club; and all those at Sumner County Schools.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Grover's honor to the Nashville Rescue Mission or to a charity of your choosing.
