Maurine Shivers Young, age 87 of Davidson County, died December 6, 2006, at Christian Care Center of Cheatham County, Ashland City, Tennessee.Visitation is Sunday, December 10, 2006, at Bellevue Church of Christ, 7401 Highway 70 South, Nashville, TN 37221, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 11, 2006, at Christian Chapel Church of Christ, 569 Humbolt-Gibson Wells, Road, Humbolt, TN 38343, at 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will be directed by Bro. Marlin Connelly, Jr., and Bro. Tim Lunn with congregational singing lead by Bro. Ron Roberson. Burial will follow at Bowers Chapel Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by parents Horace and Luella Shivers; brother, Chester Shivers; and husband, Elbert M. Young. She is survived by daughter Jane E. Young, Nashville, TN; son, Martin Lillie Fay Young, Oxford, MS; granddaughter, Haydon E. Young, Searcy, AR; brothers, Millard Marian Shivers, Richardson, TX, and Harold Evelyn Shivers, Sommerville, TN; sister, Doris Humphreys, Trenton, TN; sisters-in-law, Christeen Shivers, Oxford, MS, Gracie Young, Pulaski, TN, Frances Young and Sara Young, Nashville, TN; and many nieces and nephews.
In the late 30s and 40s, she was a noted basketball player at Peabody High School, Gipson County, TN, and with several semi-pro teams in Knoxville, TN, including a team sponsored by Standard Knitting Mills. She went to business college, and was employed by WROL Radio Station, Sears, and Roses Department Stores.
She supported and served with her husband Elbert during his 50 years of ministry to Churches of Christ in Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, and Tennessee.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Bruce Richards and staff, St. Mary Villa Adult Daycare staff, Christian Care Center of Cheatham County staff, Asera Hospice staff, and sitters Christi Gourley and Stephanie Warden for their compassionate services.
