John S. Powell, Sr., 84 of Hendersonville, TN passed away on Thursday, June 29, 2017 after a long illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ellis S. Powell and Beuna Elizer Powell of Gallatin. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Katherine Branham Powell, daughter, Katherine "Kate" Irick (Jim) of Goodlettsville, John S. Powell, Jr. "Johnny" of Hendersonville, William Guild Powell (Janet) of Lynchburg, TN, and grandchildren, Will Price, Josh Powell, Emily Powell, Caleb Powell Jones and Brooke Powell.

John held sales and sales management positions for several national companies, including Revlon, Mercury Marine, Johnson & Johnson, Wright Medical, and at Orthomet, where he was employed as an orthopedic surgical consultant. John enjoyed recreational activities with his family, had a lifelong interest in automobiles, boating, and, in retirement, woodworking. He was also a skilled pilot and aviation enthusiast. He was a member of the Sertoma Club of Hendersonville and The Rose Mont Restoration Foundation in Gallatin.

He was decorated for meritorious service in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War for performance of his duties in airlift traffic and liaison for the 315th Air Division (combat cargo).

He was born on December 5, 1932, attended Gallatin High School and, after military service, Southwestern University (now Rhodes University) in Memphis. When he was only 15, he and his friend, Wick Comer, travelled on their own to Cuba, Antigua and Guatemala by way of New Orleans.

John will be remembered for his love of family, professional dedication, adventurous spirit, sense of humor, and for being a "student of the day."

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Gallatin on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with visitation from 12:30 until service, Dr. Charles Moffatt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Alzheimer's Association ( www.alz.org ) and the Rose Mont Restoration Foundation, Inc. ( www.historicrosemont.com ).
