HUDGENS, Edgar Ray, age 85 of Nashville, passed away at home on March 29, 2009
after a brief illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Winfield and Cora Mayo Hudgens. He is survived by his wife of over fifty-nine years, Sue Powell Hudgens; daughters, Linda Bob Loftis, Nashville, and Leeanna Leon Roby, Sarasota, FL; grandsons, Mark Roby, Tokyo, Japan, Paul Roby, San Francisco, CA, and Eric Merriman Nikki Loy, Yellowstone National Park; a great-grandson, Ian Merriman, Yellowstone National Park; sister, Mary Louise Charles, Nashville; nieces, nephews and numerous cousins. A Nashville native, Mr. Hudgens served during WWII in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Caldwell, a destroyer in the South Pacific. He attended George Peabody College where he attained B.A. and Masters degrees. After he completed his education at Peabody, he taught school in the Davidson County School System. It was during this time a group of teachers became interested in starting a Credit Union for the employees of the school system and Mr. Hudgens was asked if he would serve as Treasurer. In March 1955, a credit union was chartered and he spent the remainder of his career as President of Educators Credit Union now named Cornerstone Financial Credit Union. He was innovative in beginning one of the first Share Draft checking programs, the first ATM system for members to use across the state Quicksilver, and launched a unique in-house computer system that was the first at that time. In 1971 the main office building was purchased and branch offices were established throughout the Middle Tennessee area. Mr. Hudgens served nine years on the Board of Directors of the Credit Union National Association and on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Credit Union League. After thirty-five years he retired in January 1990. He was a member of Glendale United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 31st at 11:00 A.M. from the Glendale United Methodist Church, 900 Glendale Lane, Nashville with Rev. John Williams and Rev. Sandra Griggs officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Mark Roby, Paul Roby, Curtis Young, Wesley Charles, Hank Flury, Bob Bogen, Wyatt Allen, and Theron Hunter. Active Pallbearers are Eric Merriman, Jim Anderson, Vester "Bud" Young, Derek Charles, Kevin Matthews, Andy Anderson. Interment will be in Hudgens Cemetery in Ashland City, TN. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Glendale United Methodist Church of Alive Hospice. Visitation with the family will be on Monday from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home, and on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church.
