Betty Joyce (Greenway) Jewell, 78, Goodlettsville, TN, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Joyce was born January 20, 1940, in Giles County, TN, to Ruby Mae and Rev. Raymond Greenway. She graduated from Giles County High School in Pulaski, TN, in 1958.

People marveled at Joyce's beautiful coloratura soprano voice. Prior to her admission to Martin Jr. College in 1958, she received classical voice training while still in high school from professors at Martin. She sang in the Martin Jr. College Chorus, and also won many talent contests in the area, singing pop, semi-classical and Broadway show tunes. On August 14, 1960, and after graduation from Martin, Joyce married Charles Daniel Jewell. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in August of this year. Joyce later attended Eastern Kentucky University and in 1986 earned a B.A. in Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University. She and her son, Barry Daniel Jewell, graduated from MTSU on the same day that year. She also received an M.A. in Psychology from Western Kentucky University in 1993.

Joyce had a long successful academic career at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin TN. She first served in the college library and later co-developed and became Director of the Newskills Center (now part of the Learning Commons). Under her leadership the Newskills program received the state award for Excellence in education. Joyce and her colleagues and teachers in the Center helped many students achieve academic success. Many of these success stories involved "returning women," women she counseled who were returning to college after several years. She also was stage manager, set designer, and makeup director for Vol State's dramatic productions.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 58 years, Charles Daniel Jewell, Goodlettsville, TN: son, Barry Daniel Jewell (Teresa Humol Jewell), McKinney, TX; sisters, Helen Underwood, Charlottesville, VA, Barbara Wheeler, Flatwoods, KY, Sandy Wallin, Key Biscayne, FL, and brother, Larry Greenway, Tampa, FL; grandsons, Jason, Erich, Jonathan, Brent, and Daniel; great grandchildren, Alex, and Alana. She is preceded in death by her mother and father and her brother Mark Timothy Greenway.

A Memorial-celebration of Joyce's life will be held at 2:00 PM, January 20, 2019, at Crestview Funeral Home, 1623 HWY 109 North, Gallatin, TN. A reception will follow the Memorial in the Crestview Reception area. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joyce's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Memphis, TN or Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St., Nashville, TN.
