CARTER, Ann Rankin, 79 passed away peacefully on November 28, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Ann is survived by her husband of 55 years, Neal Carter, daughter Catherine Carter John Stiles, son David Carter Marti Moore, and two grandchildren, Benjamin Carter and Olivia Carter. Born in Little Rock, AR, Ann spent much of her early life in Bristol, TN, where her father was a psychology professor and Dean of Students at King College. After graduating with honors from King, Ann began graduate studies in psychology at Vanderbilt, where she met her husband, Neal. After finishing her Master's and further studies, she began her career as an elementary teacher in the Nashville schools, later becoming a school psychologist, a position she held for most of her tenure. Ann retired from the Metro Nashville Public Schools in 1991 after many years of service. Ann was an active member of Bellevue Presbyterian Church, having been a charter member of the church, teaching classes, serving as an elder and as church organist for over 20 years. For the past 12 years, Ann fought the effects of Alzheimer's disease, and she spent the last 4 years in an Alzheimer's facility in Bellevue. Ann took great joy in learning, music, family, and her many friends. A memorial service celebrating Ann's life will be held at Bellevue Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 3 in the afternoon. The family will receive visitors before and after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association to further the search for a cure for this tragic disease.
